A Coquitlam woman is being treated in hospital after Coquitlam firefighters rescued her from her smoke-filled apartment late Sunday evening.
According to Coquitlam Fire and Rescue assistant chief Greg Mayberry, four crews responded to reports of a fire in a three-storey apartment building at 1110 Howie St. just after 11 p.m. When they arrived, they saw heavy smoke coming from the second floor.
During their search, they found a middle-aged woman semi-conscious on the floor of her second-floor unit, where the fire started; they carried her out and BC Ambulance paramedics treated her and transported her to hospital, where she remained Monday.
"Our crews did a fantastic job with their search," said Mayberry, noting the cause of the fire is under investigation.
The occupants of the building's approximately 50 suites were all evacuated — some had to be convinced to leave — but, after sitting in a TransLink bus while an inspection was conducted, were allowed to return to their homes around 2 a.m.
