Out of Province/Country medical insurance coverage
Posted On: Feb 38, 2011
To all members:

Recently I have fielded questions regarding our out of Province/Country medical insurance coverage.  After contacting Pacific Blue Cross today (604-419-2000)
,  I confirmed that we are covered for out of Province and out of Country medical expenses.

They do recommend getting additional coverage when you travel though, as any claim would affect your lifetime limit ($1,000,000) for all of your medical benefits.  They have dealt with claims upwards of $900,000 from plan members getting injured in the USA.  This would leave you with $100,000 minus any claims you have made to date for the rest of your employment with CFR.

If you decide to get additional insurance when you travel, ensure that it is "primary coverage" as cheaper policies are second to pay, and costs would be paid by Pacific Blue Cross first.

As we are part of a group policy we are entitled to a 20% discount on any additional coverage for travel insurance through Pacific Blue Cross.  I recently purchased one year of travel medical insurance for my family (2 adults & 1 child) for $89.60.  This provides us with $5,000,000 worth of coverage each with trips limited to no more than 15 days.  BCAA and other insurance providers as well as some Visa cards have similar policies.  I encourage all members to consider purchasing additional coverage when travelling.
