Fire rips through Coquitlam apartment complex
Mar 03, 2012

Dozens of Coquitlam residents will be displaced for the foreseeable future after a fire ripped through a 24-unit apartment complex on Adair Avenue Tuesday morning.

No one was injured in the fire, which was first reported at 8: 52 a.m. and contained by 11 a.m. No cause had been determined as of late Tuesday.

However, firefighters are placing preliminary damage estimates in the range of $1 million to the building alone - and that's not taking into account the loss of personal items or the costs associated with putting the displaced residents up in hotels.

"It's a big one, but not as big as some of the other ones we've had in the last few years," Coquitlam Fire and Rescue Services chief Tony Delmonico said Tuesday morning.

The fire originated in a third floor suite and, while the flames did get into the roofing, the blaze did not spread into adjacent suites within the woodframe building.

"There will be significant fire damage to the unit of origin," deputy fire chief Jim Ogloff said late Tuesday afternoon. "There will be smoke damage to adjacent units, and there will be water damage to the units below."

The initial response saw seven fire trucks and more than 40 firefighters turn out, including crews from both Port Coquitlam and Burnaby.

Fire and restoration crews spent the better part of Tuesday afternoon and evening recovering all necessary medications and pets from the building.

About one third of the units have been provided with damage estimates, and Delmonico characterized the level of damage to those suites as "minor to moderate."

Delmonico noted that the majority of the damage is in the form of water, as the building did not suffer much in the way of smoke or structural damage.

A trailer will be set up near the building today (Wednesday) with representatives from various restoration companies on scene.

A meeting for affected residents is slated for today at 1 p.m. at Dogwood Pavilion, at 624 Poirier St.
