Coquitlam students stage dramatic crash scene
May 18, 2012

Sirens in the distance. A dead pedestrian. A car hitting a hydro pole.

It wasn't real, but the dramatic accident scene staged in front of Dr. Charles Best Secondary Tuesday featured a wrecked car, student actors covered in fake blood, and real emergency workers.

The response to the simulated crash, which shut down Como Lake Avenue for 40 minutes, was designed to get students thinking about safe driving.

"Always at this time of year our thoughts turn to the safety and well being of our students, especially our graduates," principal Mary O'Neill said in a press release.

"We decided to host this vivid demonstration in order to bring home to our Best community the importance of safe and responsible behaviour while driving.

"Young adults often think they are invincible; it is our hope that this mock crash will help them to be more mindful of the consequences of their actions."

ICBC, as well as local police, firefighters and paramedics, took part in the demonstration.
